Rack and Pinion Bushings 2000-2006 Tundra 2WD/4WD | 2001-2007 Sequoia 2WD/4WD

These Polyurethane Rack and Pinion Bushings from Energy Suspension will replace the original rubber bushings in your '00-'06 Tundra or '01-'07 Sequoia sharpening your steering and fixing that loose feeling in the steering wheel. Rubber bushings can wear down and degrade over time and affect your Toyota's handling, but polyurethane rack and pinion bushings will increase the responsiveness of your steering.

Loose Steering?

When you hold your steering wheel steady do you feel some play through the steering column? Is there a lot of looseness when you turn the wheel to one side or another? The culprit is likely the original rubber rack and pinion bushings that have become worn or degraded. If you're driving out on the property and need to navigate between close-set central Texas cedar trees then you want to have control of where your Toyota is going.

The soft rubber suspension bushings that come stock on your Tundra or Sequoia bend and flex to absorb vibration that is passed from the road to the steering wheel. The problem is that all this flexing begins to take its toll on the bushings and wear them down. This can cause your steering to become loose or jerk to the left or right. To restore your steering you need to replace those bushings, but rubber replacements will flex and bend like the originals.

Polyurethane Toughness

For a longer lasting and more durable solution to loose or jerky steering Energy Suspension has manufactured some polyurethane rack and pinion bushings for the 2/4WD 2000-2006 Tundra and 2001-2007 Sequoia.

Polyurethane is more durable than rubber and holds it's shape much longer through more extreme circumstances. These steering rack and pinion bushings will keep the teeth of the pinion aligned with the rack, giving you smoother handling and more response from the steering wheel. Energy Suspension's polyurethane rack and pinion bushings won't degrade with exposure to heat, motor chemicals, and road salts like rubber will and DST backs up these bushings with an exclusive lifetime warranty.

DST's DIY Installation for 8.10104 Energy Suspension

2001-2007 Toyota Sequoia or 2000-2006 Toyota Tundra

Need help installing your new steering rack bushings? (Energy Suspension part number 8.10104) Here's a DIY for Energy Suspension part number 8.10104 - Thank you Ryan Wolfinger for providing us with this content!

Here's the tools you will need:

  • 1/2 inch wrench with 6 inch extension
  • 19mm socket
  • 22 mm socket
  • Razor knife
  • Hammer
  • Long screwdriver or pry-bar of some kind

DIY 810104 Image One

Step 1

You will be removing a total of four bolts/nuts for this project.Take a look at the picture below to see what four you will be removing.

  • Please note the nut that is welded on. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO REMOVE!

Step 2

  • Start by jacking the truck up to gain some extra clearance to work with. For those of you who have lifts this probably won't be necessary.
  • Begin by loosening the 22mm nut, use a rubber mallet with the nut loosened on the bolt and use a 22mm socket and mallet (or hammer), tap it a few times to loosen it up. The bolt should pull out freely however if it does not perhaps some PB blaster or heat will coax it out.
  • Remove the center bolt, it is a 19mm, accessed from the top of the rack. 1/2" socket wrench and short 19mm should do the trick. This is the most difficult bolt of the four to remove as space is limited; but as mentioned before, a 1/2" socket wrench and SHORT 19mm are perfect for the job. DO NOT attempt to break the center nut loose as it is welded (see above picture).
  • On the passenger side remove both the 19mm nut and bolt; the U-Shaped bushing will pull away from the rack. This bushing is split (see below) so it is very easy to remove and replace.

Step 3

  • At this point the rack should be loose, you might have to use a large screwdriver or pryer to wiggle the rack back and forth enough to get some play in it but what you are looking for is about 2-3 inches of play which is sufficient to replace the bushings.
  • Use a razor knife to cut the lip off the bushings, some say they have used torches to melt them out however I would be hesitant to use that kind of heat on an aluminum rack.

Step 4

  • Once the lip is gone use one of the 19mm bolts that you removed in conjunction with a 19mm socket (and extension if need be) to pound out the bushings (see picture). The driver side bushing is by far the hardest to remove, the center bushing comes out rather easy.

Step 5

  • You can see what the bushings look like after removal. They are flared in the middle from the factory and press fit which is why it takes a little elbow grease to remove them.

Step 6

  • From here you are ready to install your new poly bushings, the bushings are split in two so install half of the bushing, insert the metal sleeve (use white lithium grease to assist in this process) and then install the other half of the bushing. They go in fairly easy so you shouldn't have any problems. The passenger side U shaped bushing just pulls off and installation of the new poly bushing is as easy as the removal, no tools needed.

Step 7

DIY 810104 Image Nine
  • Push the rack back into place and re-install bolts and nuts, torque specs are 123 ft lbs for 19mm, 96 ft. lbs on the 22mm. Take it for a test drive and see how you like it, steering will feel a bit tighter and more responsive, certainly a modification that is worth the $40 and an hour or two of your time.

You are done installing Energy Suspension part 8.10104!
